More About Pets Elite

At Snout & Swagger, we make the effort to understand every business we represent — to know its history, its people and the thinking behind its products before we ever put it in front of you. Here is what we've come to know about Pets Elite. The same story will appear on the Pets Elite website when it relaunches shortly.

A butcher's philosophy, made for dogs

Pets Elite was born from an old-world butcher's instinct. Its founding inspiration came from a German butcher whose craft was built on a simple principle: that meat, treated properly and left as close to its natural state as possible, needs nothing added to it. When that thinking was turned toward dogs, it met a movement that had been quietly gathering pace among vets and owners alike — BARF.

What is BARF?

BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. The idea is straightforward: dogs thrive on a diet close to what their bodies evolved to eat — real meat, organ and bone, rather than the grain-heavy, heavily-processed biscuits that dominate the pet-food aisle. A BARF approach strips feeding back to whole, single-ingredient foods you can actually name, so you always know exactly what your dog is eating.

Pets Elite took the butcher's respect for good meat and the BARF principle of biological appropriateness and married the two. The result is a range where the majority of treats and foods are simply raw meat that has been gently dried — no grains, no artificial colourants or flavourants, no additives. Just real, single-ingredient nutrition, preserved through chemical-free drying rather than chemistry. It's the same reasoning we lean on across everything we stock at Snout & Swagger: if you'd check the label on your own food, why not on theirs?

BARF and the South African supply chain

South Africa is unusually well suited to this way of feeding. As a country with a deep livestock and meat-processing industry, the raw materials for genuinely natural pet food are produced right here — locally sourced, locally made. Pets Elite manufactures in Cape Town using local ingredients, which means shorter supply chains, fresher raw material, and none of the import dependency that pushes up the cost of many "premium" pet foods.

It also solves BARF's one practical hurdle. Traditional raw feeding relies on a freezer and an unbroken cold chain — a real problem in a country that knows load shedding well. By gently drying raw food instead, Pets Elite keeps the biological benefits of a raw diet while making it shelf-stable and deliverable nationwide, no freezer required. That's how a butcher's philosophy from abroad becomes something that genuinely works for a dog in Cape Town, Johannesburg or a farm in the Karoo.
