Ingredient Glossary
Single-ingredient chews are named after exactly what they are — which is useful, once you know what each one is. Here is the plain-English version. Availability varies; browse the full Dehydrated range to see what is in stock.
Beef
Trachea
The windpipe. A hollow cartilage tube, naturally rich in the compounds cartilage is made of. Light, crunchy, generally a moderate chew. Popular with owners of older and larger dogs.
Lung
Very light and airy once dried, low in fat, breaks into pieces easily. One of the better options for training rewards and for dogs on a lean diet.
Tendon
Dense connective tissue. Chewy rather than hard, and long-lasting for its size. Suits dogs who work at a chew rather than crush it.
Liver
Organ meat, extremely palatable and nutrient-dense — which is why it is the standard high-value training reward. Rich, so use small pieces.
Tripe
Stomach lining. Notoriously pungent and equally beloved by dogs. Traditionally fed to support digestion on a raw diet.
Bully sticks (pizzle)
A dense single-muscle chew. Long-lasting, high in protein, no splintering. Supervise and remove the stub.
Chicken and poultry
Chicken feet
Skin, tendon and cartilage. Dry and crunchy rather than sharp when properly dehydrated — never feed cooked poultry bone, which is a different thing entirely.
Chicken breast strips
Lean muscle meat, gently dried. Soft, easy to tear, good for puppies and seniors.
Pork
Pig ears
Cartilage and skin. Moderately fatty, well liked, moderate chew time. Reduce the day's meal slightly when you give one.
Pork skin / crackling
Higher in fat. Best as an occasional treat rather than a daily chew, particularly for dogs prone to weight gain.
Novel proteins
Proteins your dog is unlikely to have eaten before — typically ostrich, venison, rabbit or fish. Useful when a dog reacts to the common proteins, because a body cannot react to something it has never met. See Novel Proteins.
Terms you will see on labels
- Single ingredient — one thing, nothing added. No binders, sugar, salt, colourants or preservatives.
- Dehydrated / air-dried — moisture removed at low temperature over many hours. Concentrates nutrition and creates shelf stability without cooking or chemical preservatives.
- BARF — Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. A feeding approach built on raw muscle meat, organ, bone and cartilage. Read the full guide.
- Meat derivatives / animal by-products — unnamed material of unspecified origin. We do not stock products that use this wording.
- Crude protein — total protein by analysis. It says nothing about quality or how much your dog can actually use.
