Why we stock it

Trachea is a ring of cartilage, which means it flexes and compresses as a dog chews rather than simply resisting. Chewing is generally accepted to help keep teeth cleaner, though nothing replaces brushing and we would not sell it as dental treatment. At 4 to 5 on the chewyness scale it is genuinely hard — the wrong choice for a puppy, an older dog, or any dog that has chipped a tooth before.

What it is

Whole natural beef trachea, dried, hollow through the middle. Rates 4 to 5 on the Pets Elite chewyness scale — hard to very hard. Cartilage is a natural source of glucosamine and chondroitin; we do not publish a figure because there is no assay behind one. Available as a 2 pack or a 450g resealable tub.

Ingredients

Beef (trachea), vinegar.

Vinegar is used during dehydration as a natural preservative. No grain, no added salt or sugar, no colourants or flavourants.

Feeding and use

Give under supervision, with fresh water alongside. Take it away once it is small enough to swallow whole. Chews and treats should stay under about 10% of what your dog eats in a day.

Suited to

• Committed chewers with strong adult teeth
• Medium and large breeds
• Dogs who need a long session
• Dogs on a pork-free diet

Not suited to

• Puppies and dogs with milk teeth
• Older dogs with worn teeth
• Any dog that has fractured a tooth on a hard chew
• Dogs on a beef-free elimination diet

Safety

Hard chews can fracture teeth. If your dog has had dental work, or tries to swallow chews whole, choose something softer. Always supervise and remove the piece when it gets small.
