Why we stock it

This is the hardest thing in the range — a 5 out of 5 — and that cuts both ways. It will occupy a power chewer for hours and it is hollow, so you can pack it with peanut butter and hand it back. It will also fracture the tooth of a dog that is not built for it. The untrimmed version has a jagged top edge from drying; if that concerns you, buy the Trimmed version instead. Strong natural smell.

What it is

Real whole ox hooves, hollow through the centre, dried. Three to a pack. Rates 5 of 5 on the Pets Elite chewyness scale — very hard, the top of the scale. Size, shape and colour vary. Sold by unit, not by weight. The top edge is jagged as it comes out of drying.

Ingredients

Ox hoof, vinegar.

Vinegar is a traditional natural preservation aid — it is what keeps these shelf-stable without anything artificial.

Feeding and use

Always supervise, with fresh water alongside. Inspect regularly and remove the hoof if sharp edges or splinters develop, or once it is small enough to swallow. Store cool and dry. Treats should stay under about 10% of daily intake.

• Committed power chewers with strong, healthy adult teeth
• Medium to large dogs with established chewing habits
• Working breeds and high-energy dogs
• Refilling the hollow centre for a second session

• Puppies and young dogs with developing teeth
• Senior dogs with worn or sensitive teeth
• Dogs that gulp pieces whole
• Dogs with existing dental problems — ask your vet first
• Households sensitive to smell

Safety

This is the hardest chew we sell. Hard chews fracture teeth, and hooves can splinter as they wear. Supervise every session, inspect the hoof regularly, and stop using it once edges become sharp. If you are unsure whether your dog’s teeth can take it, ask your vet before buying.
