Pets Elite Peanut Butter for Dogs

Why we stock it

Two ingredients: peanuts and beef tallow. Most peanut butter sold for dogs is human peanut butter with a different label, and a fair number of human brands contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. This one is made for dogs from the start. The honest caveat is that it is calorie-dense — this is a lick mat and enrichment product, or a way to hide a tablet, rather than something to add to the bowl every day.

What it is

Ground peanuts blended with beef tallow, and nothing else. No palm oil, no added salt or sugar, no stabilisers and no sweeteners of any kind. It spreads and freezes well, which is what makes it useful in a lick mat or a hollow toy. Available in 250g, 400g and 800g — the same formula in each; the larger jars are there for households that go through it.

Peanuts, beef tallow.

Feeding and use

Dogs under 10kg: half a teaspoon a day. Dogs of 10–25kg: one teaspoon to one tablespoon. Dogs over 25kg: one to two tablespoons. Treats should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Suitable from three months. Fresh water alongside.

Not suited to

• Dogs with a peanut allergy
• Diabetic dogs — speak to your vet first
• Dogs on a weight-management plan, unless the calories are counted in

Safety

Read the label on any peanut butter before giving it to a dog. Xylitol — sometimes listed as birch sugar, or E967 — is toxic to dogs in small amounts and is common in sugar-free spreads. There is none in this product. If your dog has eaten something containing xylitol, treat it as an emergency and phone your vet.
